firecracker452 asked: I think it's sad that Tyler Hoechlin is mostly utilized for his body. It's like all everyone ever talks about, including the cast. Sure, he's hot. But in my opinion Derek is the character with the most potential. And they throw it down the drain. So I'm thinking, instead of asking Jeff Davis to stop him from waxing his chest, let's spam him with a campaign where Hoechlin gets to act instead of having to pull off his shirt in the first place.

Totally agree. I also think it’s kind of terrible the way some of them are handled in the press type stuff (and by the show’s own social media). Like when people talk about Hoechlin they talk about how hot he is. He doesn’t seem to mind precisely but he also seemed a bit embarrassed about it. But he doesn’t so much get the “that was a great choice he made in that one scene, I love how he played that, he’s so talented” sort of commentary. Which maybe that’s the material, because when I started watching the show and didn’t know what Hoechlin himself is like I didn’t think he could act his way out of a paper bag. I had no idea how much he WAS in fact acting. Teen Wolf just doesn’t give him a ton of range to play with, Derek gets to display like one emotion ever and it’s usually barely contained rage and variations of anger. Like angry sarcasm, angry doneness. I think the scripts probably mostly just have his dialogue and the stage direction “in this scene Derek’s eyebrows are angry.” It’s no wonder he constantly talks about Stiles and what a great part it is and how great Dylan is with a sort of wistfulness.

And it’s interesting because it is noticeable, and I think it’s noticeable mostly because he’s a guy. We’re used to reporters and co-stars and whoever else constantly commenting on the appearance of female actors, but not as much with men. Men get the questions about like… how they prepared for the role mentally and with research, and women get the questions about how they dieted to prepare for the role. Not that I think Hoechlin MINDS Dylan always telling him he’s hot, but it probably sucks a little when he’s like “wow Dylan so talented” and Dylan’s like “wow Hoechlin such good abs.” But it really sticks out in some of the “cute” spots especially because like, somebody made a conscious choice to present Hoechlin with the fan mail that waxes poetic about his body, somebody made a conscious choice to make the only question directed at Crystal not only the one that talks about her character’s clothing choices (which is not part of Crystal’s job) but the one that calls Allison slutty.

So I get kind of irritated on their behalf sometimes because it probably sucks a little, when people comment on what they look like instead of who they are or what they do. I’m sure all women everywhere feel that feel. I don’t get QUITE as ragey about Hoechlin as I do about some of the shit Crystal gets, though. I’m still steaming about that cast answers your tweets thing. I HAVE SUCH AN ANGER.

The main difference with the Crystal Reed tweet is that Hoechlin’s stuff is unfailingly complimentary, even if it edges towards creepy and uncomfortable a little too often. The Crystal tweet was just shitty and unnecessary. I’m not surprised someone tweeted that - there are tons of people on twitter, and not all of them stop to think about their words - but I’m appalled that the people choosing the questions specifically picked that one out for her. I was actually angry about that whole video, because the level of questions they chose had to give the cast a pretty terrible (and, I think, inaccurate) picture of their fanbase.

The Hoechlin stuff doesn’t make me angry in the same way, but I do feel bad for him. When he talks, you see where he places value, and it’s all on hard work, talent, stretching yourself and trying new things - Stiles is his favorite because there’s so much variety in his character, and he adores Dylan because Dylan is crazily talented and always changing things up to make himself even better. When he talks about his favorite scenes being the ones with Dylan, I get the sense that it’s because those are the ones where Derek gets to be something other than angry or sad. He relaxes a little around Stiles and has the space to show a wider play of emotions.

Hoechlin’s not at Meryl Streep levels or something, but with the right material and cast around him, he is able to demonstrate a lot of skill. Open Gate was a pretty awful movie, but he actually did a great job with what he was given. And becoming Derek completely transforms him - the first time I saw a video of a Hoechlin interview with him laughing and smiling, I was blown away. I had no idea his face could do those things. TBH, that’s the moment I started actually loving the show.

So yeah, as much as I reblog photo after photo of his ridiculously beautiful face, I wish more people made a point of appreciating how hard he works, how passionate he is about everything he does, and how eager he is to learn everything he possibly can about his characters and turn that into something believable. There’s a reason Derek Hale is easily one of the most beloved characters on the show - there’s a reason a huge chunk of the Teen Wolf fanbase (including myself) would quit watching if he left - and I really don’t think it’s Jeff Davis’s writing. I worry that Hoechlin’s going to get tired of bugging Jeff to talk to him about Derek’s longterm character development, or that he’s going to eventually find himself unable to smile while he talks about finding fun new things to play with in his character. And that’d be a real shame when you have an actor who’s willing to give so much.

The thing is, people probably are saying these things about him, but he doesn’t get to see them in the muddle of “omg your beautiful sweaty abs” comments that the interviewers pick out for him. Of course he’s gorgeous, but Hollywood is full of gorgeous people. It’s the other stuff that makes people special.

Shoot, I can’t find it right now, but there’s a tumblr post circulating with requests for positive fanart/letters/etc to gather and give to Crystal Reed. I hope that gains traction, because she’s specifically said she doesn’t look at her tags or comments anymore, after the negativity started to mess with her head. That means the only times she hears fan reactions now is through filters like those promo questions, and when those are so horrible, I have to wonder if she assumes that’s…kind of the high point.

…accidental long rant. Whoops. I just love ‘em both.

Oh my god yes, thank you for that addition, I agree on all points. I wasn’t even entirely aware until recently just the sheer amount of hate that gets directed toward female characters and female actors for just like… EXISTING. One of the female actors on Breaking Bad talked about it openly at around the same time I (belatedly) heard about #killallison being a trending tag or whatever (WHAT THE FUCK) and it just sort of opened this entire world to me in which I realized exactly how fucked it all is. I honestly wonder, with the death spoilers and all, whether it might be Crystal leaving the show because the fan response to her character has been so shitty. (Not that she’d be run away by that, but if the producers feel the character isn’t getting a good response AND Crystal gets tired of putting up with the shit, it could add up to the same thing.)

And if anybody would like to participate in the Crystal fanbook project that’s going on, you should check out this post right here. Give her some love.

"Whiteness" in Europe & Tumblr's US-centric SJ Discourse

Dear blackinasia

You are one of the best US-SJ people on tumblr I have ever read, very mindful of the differences in the concept of “White” in different counties and I am really need your advice on this problem, if you are willing to give it, of cause.

Google is definitely a woman, it starts suggesting things before you can even finish your sentence.

That must mean Bing is a man, tries to convince people it’s superior and does a horrible job with pleasing its user.

Yesterday’s story of the elderly NYC man who was beaten bloody by police for jaywalking today gets a tragic companion from Philadelphia:

A 16-yr-old African American boy was sexually assaulted by a police officer during a “stop and frisk” pat-down. The assault was committed with such violence that the youth’s testicles were literally ruptured.
Now, Darrin Manning of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania may never be able to father children, according to the doctors who performed surgery on his virtually destroyed testicles.
Darrin was a star basketball player with no criminal history to speak of. He was a straight-A student who never got into any sort of trouble. He was with his teammates heading to a game right after school when he encountered an officer who decided he was “suspicious” and needed to be subjected to local “stop and frisk” procedures.

Though no official reason has been given for the stop and frisk, Darrin and the other (uniformed) members of the basketball team who were stopped suggest it was because they were wearing scarves over their faces to protect against the extreme cold Philadelphia, like much of the country, has suffered this winter.

Darrin was put in handcuffs. When the officer began “frisking” him, they grabbed hold of Darrin’s genitals so hard, pulled and twisted, that the teen’s genitals literally tore off.
“I felt the officer reach and grab my butt. Then the officer grabbed my testicles and squeezed again and pulled down. And that’s when I heard something pop, like I felt it POP,” Manning said.

The incident has left the 16-year-old with felony charges of assault and resisting arrest.
"I’m just grateful that they just didn’t kill him," said Darrin’s mother.

I googled this story. Why the hell is this not making headlines? Oh wait, because he’s a young black male and America doesn’t care about young black males.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK THO???
Every time I check the news, there’s a new school shooting, another police-sanctioned assault on an unarmed black or brown kid, another cold-blooded murder under the guise of ‘stand your ground’ self-defense, and usually another psychopath walking away unpunished. What are [white] people in this country so constantly afraid of that they have to walk around armed at all times and unload an entire clip full of bullets into the first person who startles or annoys them? When are we gonna start profiling the usual suspects — angry white men?
